Frequently asked questions about the ISO 9001 internal audit
Is an internal audit mandatory under ISO 9001?
Yes. The standard requires the organisation to carry out internal audits at planned intervals to check that the system meets its requirements and is applied effectively.
How often does it need to be done?
The standard calls for a planned audit programme. In practice, most organisations audit at least once per annual cycle, ahead of the external audit.
Why use an external auditor?
The auditor must be competent and impartial with respect to the activity being audited. An external auditor brings independence and a fresh perspective, particularly in smaller organisations.
What happens if nonconformities are found?
They are recorded in the report and the organisation defines corrective actions. Closing them before the external audit helps ensure the system is in order.
